CHS LECTURES 2024 – 2025

LECTURES are held at 7.30 pm in Waunfawr Community Hall

Lectures run from September to March on every second Tuesday of the month.  We try for at least one autumn lecturer who brings plants and there is a plant-swap table from September to November. The evenings finish with tea & coffee – except for December, when we have a glass of wine and mince pies. Signs to the hall are put out on the night and there is parking next to the Hall with level access. Lecture reports are in the spring issue of Spadework.

Naturalistic Garden Design
Based in London and Wales, Andrew creates a conversation between house, garden, and the landscape beyond. He chooses native plants and juxtaposes them with a signature strong structural design.

The owner and gardener at St Timothee shares with us the ideas and planting that keeps her garden looking good throughout winter. Cost of speaker donated to NGS.

An Experience with UK Succulents
Their Pembrokeshire nursery specialises in succulent plants: Aeonium, Echeveria, Crassula, Aloe, Sempervivum, Kalanchoe and coastal hardy succulents.

ROGER LLOYD
Hydrangeas – a Gentle Obsession
Roger and Jenny Lloyd created Highfield Farm Gardens in Monmouthshire. Hydrangeas do well in Ceredigion. Roger will talk about different species, with tips on growing, pruning, propagating and care for the best performance.

CARADOC DOY
Plant-hunters & Pioneers

 Caradoc Doy grows olives in Topsham, Devon and introducing the cultivar Olea europaea ‘Peace’. He is an authority on plants introduced during the Victorian period – particularly relating to the Veitch Nurseries of Exeter and Chelsea.

A Hands-on Experience with Rare & Choice Plants
Green’s Leaves Gloucestershire Nursery specialises in choice and rare plants from a diverse range of genera. The talk will be hands-on, showing how to grow a range of specialist plants, with some to buy too!

The Gardens of High Glanau Manor
Following our recent CHS visit to High Glanau, Helena will join us to talk about the history of the gardens and the restoration and development.

Llysdinam Garden
Overlooking the Wye and encompassing two centuries of gardening history, Llysdinam has been in the hands of the Llewelyn family for 150 years. Their interests in astronomy, botany and photography are reflected in the garden. Head gardener Becky will update us on 9 years of developments since her last visit.

Angharad Philips

Reclaiming a Regency Water Garden 

Middleton Hall’s lost ‘necklace’ of lakes, cascades and waterfall created by William Paxton around 1800 has recently been re-created at the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Angharad will describe the huge 5-year restoration project that has made these historic water features a stunning new visitor attraction.

Matthew Greenfield

Planting a Shaded Garden

Matthew has worked with Richard Bramley at Farmyard Nurseries for many years.  The nursery at Llandysul cultivates a wide range of hardy garden-worthy plants, as well as rarities like Sarracenia and Primula sieboldii, and has several national plant collections. Farmyard has a reputation for being helpful and knowledgeable, and many of our members visit regularly.

50 of the Very Best Garden Tips

What gardener can resist hearing tips on how to garden? Howard has a long history in gardening and market gardening and is a very popular speaker and presenter. ‘A total horticultural experience – outstanding presentation’.

Dr.Catherine Horwood 

Gardening Women: Their Stories from 1600 to the Present

Catherine is an author, journalist, social historian and writes extensively on horticulture and garden design. She has won accolades for her books. She is a consummate garden historian with a talent for storytelling and this will be an entertaining look at some of the hidden women in horticulture

14 FEBRUARY
Ben Pope

How to Get the Most Out Of Your Garden

Whatever the size or space – according to a head gardener in West Sussex. Ben has the Wisley Practical Diploma and is an RHS Master of Horticulture. He regularly writes for Gardens Illustrated and teaches at the Chelsea Physic Garden.
