On a 2015 CHS day trip to Glebe House, Gwent, among many splendid herbaceous plants, this Eryngium was spectacular. Eryngium elegans (Miss Willmott’s ghost), is a memorable name and evidently a memorable person too. A 19th century gardener, she secretly scattered seeds of this plant in other people’s gardens.
An empty pot waiting for any CHS member to fill with a special plant from a day-trip. Sometimes members on our day-long garden-visiting trips are lucky enough to be given a cutting or some seeds. More often there is a table of plants for sale, or we visit specialist nurseries – resulting in a very gaudy (sometimes even prickled) set of passengers heading back to Aberystwyth.
